On Friday's season-opening installment of Open Source RVA, heard at noon on WRIR 97.3 FM, we welcome Kenya Gibson, who's running for reelection in November as Richmond's third district school board representative. Gibson talks about, among other things, virtual learning and childcare concerns during the COVID crisis, police presence in schools, teacher recruitment, and future challenges facing RPS. We also welcome a new co-host to the Source family... but you already know his voice: Veteran WRIR DJ Mike Kemetic—a.k.a. Michael Donovan—presents the first in a series of conversations with Richmond's notable African-American cultural figures, called "The Next 400." This week, Mike talks with figurative realist painter S. Ross Browne, whose work can be found in the permanent collection of the VMFA Virginia Museum of Fine Arts... OH BUT THERE'S MORE! Moss Theatre Artistic Director Lucian Restivo talks about the upcoming So.Queer Playwright’s Festival, and Omiyẹmi (Artisia) Green, project director, fills us in on Cadence Theatre Company’s "Sitelines Black Lives Matter" project. January 8th, 2021 | DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER LAUGHTER? On Friday’s Return to Normalcy edition of Open Source RVA, heard at noon on WRIR 97.3 FM, Mike Kemetic (Michael Donovan) talks with Maurice Jackson, Program Manager at ART 180, and a member of Richmond’s long-running hip-hop/soul group, PhotoSynthesizers. Jackson speaks about Art 180’s current youth programs and initiatives, and tips us to new music from the band. We also welcome disc jockey Freddie Jin, the host of WRIR’s new all Japanese radio show, “Banji Kaicho.” Jin, who also co-hosts the jazzy “Point of Departure” program on WTJU, debuted the new show this past week, and he talks with Don Harrison about the wide variety of Japanese music he has in store for listeners. We also have another installment of Curtain Call, produced by the Richmond Theatre Critics Circle. This week, Jerry Williams talks to two playwright’s selected for Cadence Theatre Company’s Sitelines BLM program — Obadiah Parker and Jessiquito Mairena.
